Adult only Holiday Planning Tips

Depending on your life stage whether you're the honeymooner in search of undivided peace and romance, a retiree couple looking to forgot the years of screaming nightmares or the husband and wife who just needs some time away from your own and other people kids, then here are some tips that are sure to come in handy.

When to travel to avoid kids
Sounds obvious, but avoid general holiday periods, the 'Easter break' and December, while July and August are peak children times in the Northern hemisphere. The end of April with weather beginning to get warmer and September with weather still very warm at the end of a long summer are the ideal times of year to plan your trip. In the Southern hemisphere, avoid January like the plague, particularly in around Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Vanuatu where kids have their longest holidays of the year. Planning your travel to leave and arrive home during the week, say Monday through Wednesday will also help as families tend to book Saturday through Saturday on most trips. This will also give you cheaper airfares which is another great perk.

Where to travel to
Anywhere there is a package deal will often see the families flocking to, particularly beach resorts and popular destinations such as Disneyland and major cities. There are many resort and accommodation owners who are now realising the potential of a no children policy. No children resorts in Fiji are big these days and there are many resorts catering in this manner. The Matamanoa Resort is a particular favourite of the Leavthembehind team. Child-free hotels in Tenerife and adults-only resorts in Spain are popular also and cater for a younger demographic of traveller, but you can always go wandering off to find your own quiet stretch of sand!

Before you arrive
A good tip for any trip where you will attend attractions is to call ahead and enquire whether any school field trips are on during certain times and to also avoid traveling to a major city during its festival or peak season. Look out for attractions suited to a more mature audience, like pub tours, art galleries and try more upscale restaurants than bistro/diners or less quality establishments.

Onboard Flights
With the majority of airlines now offering web check-in allowing you to select your own seats, try selecting seats away from the 'bulkhead' which generally are reserved for parents with children. A good website for viewing the best seats on a plane is seatguru.com which has 'seat maps' for most airlines planes showing the best choice of seats.

Where to Stay
Best to do plenty of research before choosing your accommodations, review the opinions of like-minded travelers on Tripadvisor. Look for more boutique accommodations and avoid the budget chains. If the accommodation's website is offering lots of family oriented packages or kids activities, you may want to look elsewhere.
